Overview

During my AI Design studies at Ironhack and UX Writing Hub, I explored how to harness AI's power to amplify productivity, create intelligent agents, and integrate diverse AI tools into every step of the design thinking methodology. By the end of the Ironhack course, I was tasked with a challenge: to conceptualize and create a product entirely powered by AI.

Recognizing the transformative challenges posed by the AI revolution, I chose to design an app that offers users meaningful support during these uncertain times. My focus was clear—crafting an experience rooted in human connection, self-improvement, and resilience in an AI-driven world.

The result is PROMETICA, an app built to advocate for human connection and inspire personal growth. Designed to help humanity thrive in the evolving AI era, PROMETICA serves as a bridge between technology and the essence of humanity, emphasizing connection, empowerment, and personal progress.

HIGHLIGHTS

Overcoming my fears of AI by learning to harness its potential, I discovered that connection and personal growth are the fundamental needs of a healthy and thriving human mind.

As part of my personal design process, sketching on paper is the first step to bringing ideas to life. This stage allows me to explore concepts and create low-fidelity wireframes, which are invaluable for identifying potential frictions early on.

For the O-Live Web-App, I focused on key functionalities, ensuring that the responsive behavior between mobile and desktop flows was seamless and effective.

Advancing to high-fidelity wireframes, I defined the app’s look and feel, making sure each wireframe included all the necessary content for future testing. This stage also provided an opportunity to gather initial user feedback, aligning design choices with the app’s style and usability goals.

Executive Summary

Prototype testing is a critical step in UX research, enabling us to observe how users interact with a product before full development. It reveals usability issues, design flaws, and opportunities for improvement by providing direct feedback on how intuitive and effective the interface is. Beyond usability, it evaluates the learnability of the design and ensures the app’s functionalities align with user needs and expectations.

I conducted 6 usability tests to gain a well-rounded understanding of user interactions:

  • 5 Moderated In-Person Tests: Provided the opportunity to observe user behaviors, gather qualitative feedback, and uncover insights in real-time.

  • 1 Moderated Remote Test

Test Objective

  • Evaluate Main Functionalities:
Assess whether users could easily interact with and navigate the app’s key features, identifying areas of friction or confusion.

  • Uncover Usability Issues and Design Flaws:
Gather insights to refine both the interface and user experience.

  • Test Learnability:
Determine how intuitive the interface is for first-time users, ensuring a low learning curve for new adopters.

  • Validate Functionality Alignment:
Confirm that the app’s features effectively address user needs and match their expectations.

Test Objective

  • Learn how the user will behave within the new flow.

  • Determine if participants understand the app, and its usability. Specifically the new swiping action and touch mode.

  • Observe how and if the users complete a selected series of tasks.

Metrics

Both quantitative and qualitative data from the testing will be gathered on a Rainbow Spreadsheet. (Time on task, Success rate, and Error rate)

In particular, the gravity of errors will be determined with Jakob Nielsen’s evaluation method

ERROR SEVERITY 2: Minor usability problem

Evidence from Usability Testing:

Four participants (P1, P2, P3, P6) identified challenges with the header design:

  • Visual Clutter: The top of the homepage was described as "too crowded," with participants struggling to understand the hierarchy of elements.

  • Small Icons: Participants noted that the icons felt too small and unnecessary, contributing to a lack of clarity and ease of use.

Improvements:

Streamlined Profile and Favourites:

  • Combined Profile Settings and Favourites into a single page accessible via a Profile Icon.

  • Positioned the Profile Icon directly over the user’s picture, creating an intuitive and visually consistent link.

Reorganized Calendar Elements:

  • Reordered and grouped calendar components to improve visual hierarchy and clarity.

  • Applied proximity-based grouping to establish logical relationships between elements, enhancing user understanding and navigation.

ERROR SEVERITY 3: Major usability problem

Evidence from Usability Testing:

  • Three participants (P1, P2, P4) struggled to understand the relationship between elements, particularly the Settings Icon and the Complementary Info Text. The perpendicular design and physical separation created confusion about their association.

  • Unreadable Vertical Text: Participant P4 reported difficulty reading the vertical purple text, which further contributed to a disjointed user experience.

  • Title-Text Disconnection: Two participants failed to relate the main copy text to the exercise title due to unclear hierarchy.

Improvements:

Improved Visual Hierarchy and Proximity:

  • Reorganized elements based on proximity principles to establish clearer relationships between icons, text, and complementary information.

  • Redesigned the layout to align related elements horizontally, eliminating perpendicular designs that disrupted flow.

Readable Text Formats:

  • Replaced vertical text with horizontally aligned labels to enhance readability and reduce confusion.

Evidence from Usability Testing:

  • Difficulty Sharing via Chat: Three participants (P2, P4, P6) struggled to locate the option for sending exercises to their contacts via chat.

  • Misleading Social Media Icons: All participants first attempted to use the prominent Social Media icons, failing to notice the CTAs for sharing within the app.

  • Hierarchy Issue: The CTAs were visually overshadowed by the Social Media icons, which diverted attention and prioritized external actions over in-app functionalities.

Improvements:

  • Hierarchy Adjustment: Increased the prominence of CTAs by making them full-width buttons, ensuring they stand out as primary actions.

  • Redesign of Social Media Icons: Reduced the size of the Social Media icons and applied a subtler color scheme to make them visually less dominant.

INCREASE ACCESSIBILITY

A user asked, “What happens if I don’t want the volume on?” This feedback inspired me to enhance the design for users with hearing disabilities.
